On 1 December 2022, join us for the next in our series of Better Evidence, Better Government events, hosted by the Evidence Quarter (EQ) and the Policy Institute at King’s College London.
This is an exciting opportunity to hear Lord Gus O’Donnell in conversation with Professor Richard Davies as they discuss his time in government, the role of evidence and economics in policy and politics and what part this can play in the future.
A crossbench peer, Lord O’Donnell served as Cabinet Secretary, the highest official in the civil service, from 2005 to 2011. He began his career as a lecturer in political economics, before spending time in the Treasury and British Embassy in Washington. He is now the non-Executive Chairman of Frontier, one of the largest economic consultancies in Europe as well as a visiting professor at the London School of Economics. He has a strong interest in wellbeing, including playing a key role in setting up What Works for Wellbeing.
Richard Davies is Director of the Economics Observatory and professor at the University of Bristol. He is a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Performance and has been Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers at HM Treasury, an economist and speechwriter at the Bank of England, and economics editor of The Economist. His book, Extreme Economies, won the Lonely Planet/Stanford’s award for travel writing in 2020. He holds a PhD in economics from NYU Stern.
The conversation will start at 6pm in person in the Katherine Johnson Event Space at the EQ, or online via Zoom. Wine, soft drinks and mince pies will be available afterwards from 7-8pm.
